Book Review & Rec: Once Upon A Zombie + Giveaway!

5 stars (I loved it) for Once Upon A Zombie by Billy Phillips and Jenny Nissenson

Unexplainablenews.com is reporting strange phenomena in cemeteries in Scotland, Germany, Italy, and America. Only one individual knows what's happening - and why! This person also knows the one girl who can prevent an unspeakable and imminent catastrophe from taking place. But will she?
When Caitlin Fletcher's mom disappeared (or left?) four years ago, Caitlin began suffering from breathless bouts of anxiety. Her new move to London, with her Dad and her brainiac sister, threatens to lead to more situations that will trigger panic. Now, she's having anxiety over the possibility of having anxiety!
Caitlin's life takes a turn for the bizarre when she's tricked into climbing down a "rabbit hole", landing in a wondrous fairy tale universe - except it's crawling with savage, starving blood-eyed zombies. But what's scarier - a blood thirsty zombie, a panic attack....or the painful truth?!

I was kindly given a review copy through Netgalley, with many thanks to the publisher.
Also, a million thanks to the people at Smith Publicity and the author for offering me a hardback copy of this book.

I love fairytale mash-ups and this one takes it to another level. A zombie 'fairy tale'. Though I'm not quite sure fairy tale is the right label for it as these aren't your average princesses anymore.
They kick ass!
Meet some of the princesses (don't they look brilliant?)

Caitflin Fletcher is afraid of, well..., everything. She has terrible anxieties and wants nothing more than to be invisible. When her handsome friend Jack invites her to the school ball, she is ecstatic about his invitation but absolutely terrified of everything else it entail. But when Jack offers to go and check out the cemetery where Lewis Carroll is buried, in the light of some mysterious sightings that happened all over the world. Caitlin, excited about a story for the website unexplainablenews.com decided to join Jack in this little adventure (even if it scares her). Little did she know that her little adventure would turn out into arriving in a alternative universe filled with fairy tale characters, zombies, and blood-eyes monsters. And they're all looking at Caitlin to save their world as they know it. Apart from the blood-eyed, they're looking at her as a tasty snack.
Can Caitlin overcome her fear and help this brilliant world? Will she be able to face some of her fear, or will the anxiety attacks keep her paralyzed?

I can't stress enough how much this story surprised me. Aside from one predictable story twist, I was constantly surprised by the way these authors have written a story that was both exciting and with a layer of character depth. The writing was splendid and the descriptions were so vividly done that it almost felt like I was watching a movie, instead of reading a book. Everything was so easy to imagine that you felt like you were part of the story.

This story is vividly written and jam-packed with action that'll make you want to join Caitlin Fletcher on her adventure in saving this alternate universe from decay and a terrible faith.
It was an absolute delight to read and I would recommend it to anyone!

The Color of Fear is the first book in the Once Upon A Zombie series and I can hardly wait to find out what's coming next. It's promising to be a whirlwind of a trip through various different fairy tale worlds.

As a little side note I just want to point out how in love I am with the cover. It is stunning and I can tell there's been put a lot of time in working out the different visuals. This book isn't only made perfect by the actual story but also by the little details they have put into putting it all together.

For example: Book One is all about the colour of Fear. In this story Fear is represented by the colour of red. Imagine my excitement when I found this hardback book came in a beautiful crimson red!
It's little things like that what make book reading that little bit more exciting!!

I could go on for ages about why you should read this book but instead of me talking about it, I suggest that you go and find out for yourself. And I am offering you the perfect opportunity!
